    Mitigating the risks of climate change

    “NIWA uses GIS to map and interpret modeled climate change projections over New Zealand and provides these to a range of end-users, for example, regional councils, industry, and other researchers. These maps allow decision-makers to understand potential future changes in climate at a high resolution across New Zealand and make planning decisions accordingly.” – Petra Pearce, Manager – Climate, Atmosphere & Hazards at NIWA.

    Events such as the Australian wildfires at the beginning of this year brought climate change to the forefront of the public consciousness. Record-breaking temperatures and severe drought provided the ideal conditions for wildfires to establish themselves. In a local, albeit less extreme example, the Auckland drought this year is one of the severest droughts in modern times. According to NIWA regional climate models, such climatic patterns will be expected in higher frequencies over the course of this century.

    Although the future may seem grim, science and technology can still guide us toward a better understanding of climate change and ultimately, the development of mitigation strategies against its impacts. Mapping environmental problems is crucial to establishing a link between the state of the climate and potential causes, and technology serves both as a powerful tool to examine climate change as well as to educate the public on its significant risks.

    Geographic Information Systems (GIS) provides the framework in which we can collect, analyse, and manage geographic information. Most data are inherently spatial, and climate change data is no different.

    Some ways in which researchers leverage GIS to study climate change include locating areas where temperatures significantly deviate from the global average and studying satellite data to monitor land cover changes relevant to changing climates. In New Zealand, key areas of concern include the predicted higher frequencies of extreme events such as floods and droughts, therefore modeling these and understanding how different regions will be affected is crucial to prepare adaptation strategies for the various regional and local governments.

    NIWA’s Climate Change Hub allows users to look up climate change projections for their area

    Results of climate change studies, such as this national flood risk report from the Deep South Challenge, can be used to inform the planning of infrastructure such as roads, bridges, coastal properties, utilities pipes and more. Such knowledge produced by research institutes relies heavily on GIS tools and applications to interpret the data. When extreme events do occur, GIS intelligence and real-time situational awareness maps provide emergency personnel with vital information on which areas require the most urgent attention and can act accordingly.

    In addition to the role that GIS plays in helping researchers to understand climate change and mitigate its risks, GIS tools can generate data visualisations to inform and engage the public in the form of dashboards, interactive maps and apps. Here is a brilliant example of a sea-level rise viewer for Wellington, created by Greater Wellington Regional Council. Theories and articles about climate change can only do so much to influence public perception, so establishing that solid link between the theory and real-life effects through interactive apps is key to engaging with the public.

    ArcGIS and the next generation of Unreal Engine

    We live in exciting and dynamic times. A week ago, I wrote a blog post about ArcGIS and game engines. In that week a lot has happened. The biggest news in the world of game engines is a first look at the Unreal Engine 5, announced on 14th of May.

    Unreal Engine 5 (UE5) wasn’t just announced as ‘we are working on it’ but in the stunning, hard to believe demo, ‘Lumen in the land of Nanite’ running on the next-generation console. All in real-time on a Playstation 5. In case you haven’t seen it yet visit YouTube and join over 11 million other people.

    UE5 is based on two new technologies described well in the announcement post, Lumen and Nanite. I will not describe these as Epic already did that and showed what they are capable of. What I would like to do is to see how these may be relevant to the GIS and related technologies.

    Lumen

    Lumen’s dynamic nature allows accurate modelling of dynamic lights as well as global illumination. In the example screenshot below the wall of the cave and statues are lit only by light bouncing off the surfaces of the objects in the scene. In real-time. This can have real application in the evaluation of light conditions of proposed buildings, the shade of trees on the footpath, the glare from office buildings with glass façades, the efficiency of streetlights (using IES profiles) and many others.

    Since Lumen reacts to changes in geometry, we could have a real-time editor application and evaluate the effect of using smaller windows to the lighting of the room. Going to the macro scale, moving buildings closer to each other would allow less light on the street and footpath. We could see urban canyons before we build them giving us the option to correct them. To be honest, we don’t yet know all of the features of the Lumen system so I have taken some liberties with these examples.

    Lumen could help in all aspects of urban planning and development where lighting is crucial.

    Nanite

    The second new technology is Nanite. The purpose of Nanite is to handle really, really large volumes of geometries seamlessly. In the scene below Nanite is handling 1 billion triangles from source geometry and rendering about 20 million in each frame. That’s a lot of triangles. For example, in the Revit model of Christchurch City library, Turanga has over 32,000 of complex 3D objects like staircases, windows, furniture and a lot more triangles in total. The possibilities of Nanite seem limitless, and means we could have not just one but multiple versions of the library building fully modelled with details as intended by the architects and designers. That could include detailed furniture, sculptures, wall decorations, pictures and even books on the bookshelves, not rendered as a fake collection repeated many times but as actual individual objects.

    The example of the statue alone shown below has over 33 million polygons. In addition to that no processing of the asset was performed, just a simple import.

    Nanite’s capabilities could change my CGA coding habits. Since I don’t have to worry about the limits of geometric complexity, I could write my rule to actually split the façade into rows of bricks and mortar and then model every brick, floor or roof tile as an actual individual 3D object. Procedural nature or CGA allows me to export a large number of buildings with the level of detail I want to create.

    What was also briefly mentioned, but I am quite interested in, is the ability to run fluid simulations in UE5. This functionality could be used in landscape design to simulate river/creek flow after correcting the river bed, evaluate the visual quality of the water feature in the park, maybe even water erosion at a river bend. If this can be integrated with Chaos physics system then we are in for a treat.

    Game engines with these capabilities are/could be capable of rendering huge terrains and landscape systems with little to no processing required. We may be able to run the simulation of the White Island eruption in real-time, based on scientific data collected and simulated in Niagara, UE’s particle system and LAS or DEM data from OpenTopography.

    A really exciting piece of information is the timeline. We are not talking about a 5-year plan. The preview of UE5 will be available early next year with the release late next year. UE5 will run on next-generation consoles, PC, Mac, iOS and Android.

    So that’s what is coming up next year. If you want to work with Unreal Engine today, Unreal Engine 4.25 was released on the 6th of May. It has a number of new features, but they seem to pale in comparison to UE5. For me, an interesting feature is the continuation of the support for LiDAR data and a new and improved acoustic system. Maybe this acoustic system could be used in evaluating (and quantifying?) noise from traffic on the road. This would allow designers to evaluate the efficiency of greenery as a sound barrier or increased noise produced by introducing two new lanes during a road expansion.

    Noise from the airport runways is always one of the key factors in the design of a new runway and this could be the tool to ‘preview’ proposed runways including the noise.

    There are also other examples of how game engines can be used as an educational tool. Here I am not talking about the projects specifically designed in a game engine as an architecture or art project. There are numerous projects done over the years showing us the Notre Dame cathedral, Louvre museum and similar projects. During this week, 15th – 22nd May, anyone can register and download Assassin’s Creed Discovery Tour projects/games. The name suggests something violent and yes, the original games are about assassinations set in the ancient civilizations of Greece and Egypt. But Ubisoft removed the violent gameplay elements and over four years of development created a beautiful world and buildings of these civilizations and added the interactivity one can expect from a game. Players can freely roam the world, explore life, habits and customs, interact with avatars or take curated tours. It can be also used as an educational tool with quizzes, gain achievements for discovering places and enjoy the beauty of long lost places.

    What a great example of what game engines combined with history, geography and other sciences can produce.

I was a part of the Eagle Technology technical updates team and my contribution was presenting on GIS and game engines.     My gaming past and interests

    Sometime close to the end of the last century I bought my first computer and like all teenagers at the time was exploring and hoarding games and needless to say, I fell in love with them. Through the years computers and games evolved at a great pace and I was fully immersed. I played all kinds of games, from puzzles to adventure, arcade, and shoot-them-up.

    Later, there was less time and opportunities for gaming, but I still kept my hand in. New kinds of games came on the market but more about that a little bit later.

    Game engines?

    You may not be familiar with the term game engine but in short, that’s the term for a tool (or a set of tools, more accurately) for creating games. All of the games you may be playing on your mobile phone, console, or PC are made using a game engine. Game engines are big, complex, and require a lot of skill to fully utilize their potential. Game engines handle all aspects of a game – from graphics to sound, animation, art, physics, end platforms, and everything else that creates an end game.

    Game engines are versatile, and they have multiple uses. That may be for a virtual reality type game like Half-Life: Alyx or a fully immersive experience like Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire. You may have played an augmented reality game like Pokemon GO or Angry Birds AR: Isle of Pigs.

    Why are game engines important?

    There are all kinds of different games today running on almost any possible device. Modern games allow players to interact with the world in an intuitive way. For instance, If there is a door you can expect it can be opened (unless blocked by debris) and if it requires a key the game will tell you. You can move objects around; some are inert, and others interact with one another. For instance, dropping a wooden crate from a roof will cause it to break; that’s the rule of physics, and a game follows this logic.

    If done well the game becomes an immersive and believable world. Often games will have a photorealistic look and AAA games can make it hard to distinguish between a real object and its representation in a game.

    This has led to organisations such as The Architecture, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry adopting game engines as presentation and rendering tools. In 2019 over 50% of users surveyed by the CG Architect site are experimenting with additional rendering engines (like game engines).

    There are multiple studios creating games with communities of game developers that are large, very active, and supportive.

    GIS and the history of games

    So if this technology is emerging in the mainstream now, how did GIS or real-world data play a part? Certainly, there were games that used spatial/GIS principles like the beloved SimCity franchise. These games featured layers for water, power, etc as well as demand/supply models. But they didn’t have the option to import real-world data.

    Nevertheless, games like these started a whole sub-genre of city building games and with more recent games like City Skylines, modders (individual developers) began to create optional modules that enabled the loading of real-world data. Modern open-world games allow players unrestricted movement across the gaming world and even to build entire worlds such as in Minecraft.

    This has sparked a whole new interest in re-creating neighbourhoods or cities in these game/virtual environments. To do this manually is a very tedious and time-consuming job, but is being overcome by using professional tools. For example, FME was used to process and import cities in Minecraft.

    What can I do today?

    Today there are several options for bringing in GIS data into game engines. CityEngine is the application that provides the most options. From CityEngine one can combine existing GIS data, create procedural models of buildings for example, and export models to industry-standard formats like glTF, FBX, and OBJ. These formats are supported by the vast majority of mainstream game engines such as Unreal Engine, Unity, Unigine, Godot, and others.

    CityEngine also offers an option of exporting models to simple VR applications, ArcGIS 360 VR. ArcGIS 360 VR runs on Samsung’s Gear VR and it is good entry point into VR apps.

    The real strength of CityEngine is in support of Unreal Engine. Support comes in several ways, primarily in the form of the Datasmith format. Datasmith was created by Epic Games for Unreal Engine back in 2017. Epic Games is making great strides in supporting and developing applications for AEC, automotive industry, and entertainment/media.

    Working in the game engine environment can be a challenge so Esri’s R&D team developed templates to ease this process. CityEngine VR Experience is an application template allowing one to create VR or standard application with an almost plug-and-play workflow.

    The ArcGIS Platform supports game engines and tools in several ways, primarily via CityEngine but that is not the only option. There are several options aimed for developers using most used tools like Maya and Houdini. Esri has developed plugins, Serlio and Palladio respectively, that allow the use of CityEngine’s rule packages within these applications. The latest plugin is Vitruvio for Unreal Engine.

    On the other hand, game engine developers are increasing support for GIS data and features. In the latest release of Unreal Engine, LiDAR point cloud data is supported natively. All options we see for LiDAR in ArcGIS Pro are also in Unreal Engine editor.

    Following this rapid development of game engines and their increased use in enterprise applications, Esri is expanding its product range. At the Esri Developer Summit in March, Esri announced the Beta Program for two new products – ArcGIS for Unreal and ArcGIS for Unity for the main game engines on the market.

    With these products, developers will be able to bring in GIS data and services directly to game engines and incorporate them in-game/application design. And the AEC industry will continue to uptake the data now available.

    The future is exciting and it will be interesting to see how these two communities will influence one another.

    The next Geospatial Accelerated Learning Programme (GALoP) programme express starts on 13 July 2020. GALoP-X is a 6 week programme designed to condense the key leanings and skills needed to either kick start or re-invigorate a GIS career. Alongside the hands-on technical skills, the course provides overviews of key areas such as solution architecture, project management, business cases as well as a greater understanding of the various ways in which geospatial can be applied to problems in the real world.

    COVID-19 Business Continuity Solution

    With NZ’s imminent move to Alert Level 3, many organisations are now preparing to safely restart operations- working in a way that will neither spread the virus nor expose their staff and others to unnecessary risks. Alongside the government’s key advice for organisations making this move (such as remote work where possible, social distancing and hygiene), the government has stated that at Alert Levels 2, 3 and 4, businesses should take measures to allow potential contact tracing including keeping track of all people (staff, visitors and customers) at workplaces.

    To help implement such measures, Esri recently released a solution template which Eagle Technology has supplemented with some NZ specific apps and capabilities.

    This combined capability uses either Esri’s ArcGIS Online (recently listed on the NZ Government list of Cloud tools) or ArcGIS Enterprise to provide a series of configurable web forms, apps, and dashboards which can quickly be set up to enable organisations to answer some key questions related to COVID-19 and their operations:

    • Understanding COVID-19 workforce status
      • Staff check-ins or team check-ins give organisations greater clarity about who is working, and where they are working as well as who may be unwell.
    • Understanding and Managing COVID-19 facility status
      • Managers can assess which facilities are impacted/closed or affected by access restrictions and which staff and visitors have accessed these facilities.
    • Sharing Facility status with stakeholders and customers
      • Organisations are able to communicate facility status to internal or external stakeholders such as customers
    • Recording staff and Visitor Movements at facilities and other locations
      • Capturing information that can be used for potential contact tracing if needed.

    Beyond this core solution, Eagle is working with a number of organisations with highly mobile workforces to make use of the core Esri apps (such as Tracker for ArcGIS)  to allow fine-grained personnel location recording and monitoring. In addition, special Disaster Response Programme licensing can be requested for customers who do not have in place the correct software licensing needed to deploy these capabilities.

    Like the entire COVID-19 pandemic, the situation for business can change rapidly any solution must adapt to changing needs. To this end, Eagle and Esri are continuing to develop and evolve this and related solutions to best support organisations continue their operations safely throughout the COVID-19 pandemic and we will be sharing updates as these are developed.     Engage your children at home with interactive maps

    Try out Mapping Hour – access a collection of 20 free informal one hour instructional videos about interactive maps and GIS from 7 April 2020. These videos will show viewers what is possible with GIS and equip them to engage young minds eager for learning opportunities.

    The videos will be released progressively at esriurl.com/mappinghour, 

    The videos will be presented by Charlie Fitzpatrick, Tom Baker, Kylie Donia, and Joseph Kerski from the Esri’s Education Industry team and will include: 

    • software tools, 
    • academic content, and
    • instructional strategies 

    that help students from primary through to secondary school to learn how to spot patterns, illuminate relationships, and build captivating presentations. 

    The videos will cover the following software:

    • ArcGIS Online, 
    • Survey123 for ArcGIS, 
    • ArcGIS Dashboards, 
    • ArcGIS Business Analyst Online, and 
    • ArcGIS StoryMaps

    Resources utilised for the videos will be provided by Esri Training Services, Learn ArcGIS, and the Esri Schools teams.

    Esri Offers Students Free Access to Software for Continued Education Through Coronavirus Closures

    Esri, the global leader in location intelligence, announced this week that it will provide free access to its ArcGIS platform and learning resources through the Learn.ArcGIS.com website to support tertiary education students who no longer have physical or remote access to campus computer labs during the COVID-19 outbreak.  

    Students will receive access to ArcGIS Online and over 20 apps including ArcGIS Pro, along with a library of lessons to continue their learning and complete courses. Access is available globally to students ages 18 and over.  

    Learn ArcGIS promotes learning by doing through guided lessons based on real-world problems in industries such as urban planning and disaster response, and new lessons on public health have just been added. Learn ArcGIS lessons cover both beginner and advanced topics and are available in seven languages. 

    “We believe education creates opportunities for people of all ages while building communities and advancing our knowledge for a better world,” said Jack Dangermond, Esri founder and president. “This is especially important now during this national crisis. We consider it part of our mission to provide technology free of cost during these difficult times and ensure that students and educators are supported as they transition to remote learning.”    

    Students who sign up between March 1 and June 30 will have access until August 31, 2020. Before you sign up check to see that your tertiary education provider hasn’t already given you remote access to your campus computer labs or ArcGIS Platform.     Join us for the 2020 Virtual User Conference Series

    The Virtual User Conference (VUC) Series started this morning (31 March) with an ArcGIS Technology update from the Eagle Technology team. The team did a great job giving a virtual update of technology in place of the 2020 NZ Esri Regional User Conference and South Pacific GIS event in-person technology update. 

    The VUC is set to continue with a series of webinars throughout April. These webinars will be presented by members of the New Zealand Esri User Group (that’s you!) and will showcase the work that you have been doing with ArcGIS across different regions of the country. 

    The schedule of dates for the VUC series is: –
